Browning-Resistant Apples Get Federal OK

Apples genetically modified to resist browning are coming to stores in late 2016. The Agriculture Department approved the apples on Friday, saying they are not likely to post a plane pest risk or have “a significant impact on the human environment.” The fruits, which will be marketed as Arctic Golden and Arctic Granny Smith, are developed by a Canadian company, Okanagan Specialty Fruits Inc. They are expected to become available in stores in small, test-market quantities in late 2016.
