Despite a notoriously ruthless 28-year run as president of Zimbabwe—rife with the jailing and torturing of political dissidents—Robert Mugabe can claim a peace prize to his name. The dictator is the 2015 recipient of the Confucius Peace Prize—China’s answer to the Nobel Peace Prize. According to a Thursday statement from the Chinese judging committee, Mugabe “has been trying to stabilize the country’s political and economic order ever since the country was first founded,” and is therefore deserving of the award. Other totally beneficient leaders to win the prize include Cuban leader Fidel Castro (2014) and Vladimir Putin (2011).
