A Belgian bus struck the wall of a Swiss tunnel on the way back from a ski trip, killing 28 people—including 22 children, most around 12 years old. Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo said it was "a tragic day for all of Belgium.” The children were returning from a week of skiing in Val d'Anniviers in the Swiss Alps. The crash is something of a mystery: the bus was nearly new and equipped with safety belts, the line has a good reputation, the drivers appear to have followed the regulations for proper rest, and the tunnel wasn't crowded. An investigation is underway.
