In internal review of posts deleted from the site since 2012, when Ben Smith was hired as editor in chief, revealed that Smith ordered three articles deleted due to advertisers. One was a post criticizing Monopoly after Monopoly’s parent company inked a deal with BuzzFeed, one was a piece criticizing an ad campaign by Dove, which belongs to BuzzFeed advertiser Unilever, and the third was a piece about Super Bowl advertisers that included Pepsi, whose Twitter account was being operated by BuzzFeed’s marketing department. The investigation came about after a report revealed the site had deleted 1,112 posts.
