The number of homes destroyed by California wildfires has climbed to nearly 1,600, state fire officials say. A massive blaze north of San Francisco that has destroyed more than 1,000 homes has become the state’s fourth-worst wildfire in history. At least five people have died in the fires, which authorities say are about 70 percent contained.
