Two men were convicted Thursday in Riverside, California, on federal charges related to a plot to travel overseas to join al Qaeda and the Taliban in order to kill Americans. The two were identified as Sohiel Omar Kabir, 36, of Pomona, an Afghanistan-born U.S. citizen, and and Ralph Deleon, 25, of Ontario, a permanent resident from the Philippines, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The men were found guilty of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists, and conspiring to kill officers and employees of the United States, authorities said. Kabir had already moved to Afghanistan, where he was seized by American soldiers and returned to the U.S. The pair face life without parole when they are sentenced Feb. 23. Two other men indicted in the same case in 2012 pleaded guilty and await sentencing.
