Two men who are suspected to have links to al Qaeda and have been accused of plotting to derail a Via Rail passenger train will appear in Toronto court on Tuesday. The two men faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder “for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with a terrorist group.” Neither of the suspects, Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, of Montreal, and Raed Jaser, 35, are Canadian citizens, although they are both in the country legally. According to Canadian police, the two men were acting on orders from al Qaeda in Iran, although that country’s foreign minister insisted on Monday that there is “no firm evidence” linking them to Iran.
