The original painting of 16th-century Italian artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio's Judith Beheading Holofernes may have been discovered in a Toulouse apartment attic, La Dépêche reported Monday. The French cultural ministry is currently inspecting the work after it was discovered by homeowners in an opening in the attic wall. The oil-on-canvas depiction of Judith beheading Assyrian general Holofernes was painted during the final decade of Caravaggio's life, between 1600 and 1610. The artwork is only known because of a copy from the same period that is currently on display in Rome.
