After six rounds of voting, the RNC chose former Maryland Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele as its next chairman. In the final round of voting, Steele defeated Katon Dawson, the chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party and a former member of a whites-only country club. Steele’s politics are generally centrist.
