More than 700,000 Kentucky homes and businesses are still without power after an ice storm hit the region last Monday, the Associated Press reports. The ice shattered utility poles, downed trees, and drove thousands from their homes into shelters. Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshar deployed all of his Army National Guardsmen to check on those who might still be huddling in their unheated homes. Kentucky authorities are investigating roughly a dozen deaths, at least one from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by using a charcoal grill indoors as a source of heat. The storm has also been blamed or suspected in 42 additional deaths in Arkansas, Texas, Missouri, Virginia, Oklahoma, Indiana, West Virginia, and Ohio.
