During Israel’s operation in Gaza, the supposed shelling of a U.N.-run school was a source of international controversy, but it turns out it may not have happened at all. According to the U.N., the Israeli mortar fire that killed 43 people in Jabilaya refugee camp on January 6 landed outside the school, but never hit the building itself. “Among the dead,” according to The Washington Post, “were those who had sought shelter in the school but happened to have been standing directly in front of it when the mortar shells landed.” Palestinians corroborated this account.
