The GOP, it seems, isn’t going to make for a happy partner in the “post-partisan era.” According to The Washington Post, the Republican Party is reinvigorated by “its stand against a stimulus package that they are increasingly confident will provide little economic jolt but will pay off politically for those who oppose it.” Last week, one House Republican, Pete Sessions of Texas, favorably compared the GOP’s opposition to the Taliban. Republicans have tried too, to frame the conflict as them versus congressional Democrats, not President Obama, who remains popular. The stimulus is expected to pass the Senate still, and one of its few Republican supporters, Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter takes to the op-ed page of The Washington Post to say why: “The country cannot afford not to take action.”
