A tentative peace might not seem like much, but for war-torn Darfur, it’s a huge step: The Sudanese government has announced a deal with the region’s most active rebel group to end the attacks on more than 2 million people in refugee camps and to exchange prisoners. The agreement, reached in Qatar and to be signed tomorrow between Khartoum and the Justice and Equality Movement, faces two main obstacles: a proposed indictment from the International Criminal Court of Sudan’s president and the refusal of any other rebel group to sign on. But international observers say it’s an important step in ending the conflict, which has killed at least 300,000 and displaced 2.2 million more.
