Sad news today: Senator Ted Kennedy had lost his battle with brain cancer. The Massachusetts Democrat, 76, had served in the Senate since 1962 and was the sole surviving son of Joseph P. and Rose Kennedy—and, of course, the last of the Kennedy brothers. The senator announced he had a malignant brain tumor in May after he suffered a seizure at the Kennedy compound in Hyannisport, Mass. He had been seldom seen on Capitol Hill since then, though he attended Obama’s inauguration (and fell ill at a luncheon following the ceremony). His last Senate vote was February 9, when he flew up from Florida to approve an early version of Obama’s stimulus package. He leaves his wife, Victoria Reggie Kennedy, and three children, Kara, Edward Jr., and Patrick.
