Sixty years after its publication in German, the work that Primo Levi called “the greatest book ever written about the German resistance to the Nazis” is coming out in English. Alone in Berlin by Hans Fallada tells the story of Otto and Anna Quangel, who, after their son is killed on the frontlines in France, initiate a massive resistance effort. They leave postcards denouncing the regime in the stairwells of German office buildings, and are eventually discovered through a minor mistake. The Times of London calls the book occasionally redundant and overly-editorial, but says it is packed with telling portraits of everyone from sympathetic neighbors to SS officers.
