New Delhi became even more of a hot spot last week after the kickoff of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week. “India is not all about peacocks and elephants—it is about the artisan and craft,” said designer Namrata Joshipura, whose collection was spotlighted by Suzy Menkes as emitting a “global, tough chic 1980s vibe,” and was particularly notable for its emphasis on handmade Indian embellishments. Models in Manish Arora’s show strutted down the runway to the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack, outfitted with Lion King embroidered dresses and skirts with three dimensional butterflies—all of which felt, somehow, easily transcontinental. Keep your eyes on the stores for imports—for the first year ever the fashion director of Barneys New York was seated in the front row.
