This year’s Pulitzer Prizes went to books on a range of titles, but two books about America’s racial history were both honored. Annette Gordon-Reed’s The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family, about the family of Thomas Jefferson’s slave, Sally Hemmings, won in the History category. Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans From The Civil War to World War II, by Douglas A. Blackmon, which explores African American disenfranchisement, won the prize for General Nonfiction. Also nabbing honors were Jon Meacham’s American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House, which won the prize for Biography, and W.S. Merkin’s The Shadow of Sirius, which took home the top prize for poetry.
