After yesterday’s news that Arlen Specter had ditched the GOP, The New York Review of Books published his first essay since 1988. In an article entitled “The Need to Roll Back Presidential Power Grabs,” Specter shares his thoughts on the Bush Administration, and outlines the legislations he is proposing and hopes fellow Democrat President Obama will support. Specter has also written two books: Passion for Truth: Finding JFK's Single Bullet to Questioning Anita Hill to Impeaching Clinton (2000), and Never Give In: Battling Cancer in the Senate (2008). In the NYRB, Specter writes that he’ll mandate the Supreme Court to review cases brought by the ACLU that challenge the Bush Administration’s wiretapping and the phone companies that allowed it. “I witnessed firsthand, during many of the battles over administration policy since September 11, how difficult it can be for Congress and the courts to rally their members against an overzealous executive,” Specter writes, concluding that, “I will continue the fight whatever happens.”
