Napoleon Bonaparte may have been an emperor and war hero, but what you don’t know is that he's also a failed romantic novelist. When Napoleon died in exile on St. Helena, he left behind a manuscript he had written as “a brilliant, youngish soldier tumultuously in love.” After his death, the pages were scattered in private collections around the world, but scholars have been busy reconstructing and translating the work since. The first page of the long-lost book was discovered last year by an English expert on Napoleon, and sold at auction for £17,000, and now, the first English version of the novella, Clisson and Eugénie, is due out this fall.
