Donald Fisher, the founder of the Gap retail chain, and his family have given up on their efforts to construct a contemporary art museum at the Main Post of San Francisco's Presidio. While the family still may try to build an art space for its collection in the Presidio, it has abandoned its proposal for a large-scale building at the site, after a fierce battle with community groups. "Doris and I will take some time to consider the future of our collection and other possible locations for a museum, which could include other sites within the Presidio and elsewhere," Don Fisher said. Meanwhile, some of the same forces that opposed the 100,000-square-foot museum are looking for ways to keep the Fisher collection, and the family money, in San Francisco.
