New car buyers, rejoice: Despite an announcement Thursday that Obama's "Cash for Clunkers" program was ending after it burned through the $1 billion allocated for it in six short days, the White House said on Friday that the program is still alive. "If you were planning on going to buy a car this weekend using this program, the program continues to run," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said. The administration is looking for ways to continue the popular new program, he said, which offers $3,500 to $4,500 for people who trade in old cars for more fuel-efficient ones—though he didn't say how long the program could continue without an infusion of funds. "We feel confident that we'll have a solution that people can agree on moving forward, and that the program continues," he said. Representatives of car dealers said Thursday that they'd been told by the Transportation Department to stop offering the rebates, creating confusion over its status.
