Veteran Los Angeles Times sportswriter Mike Penner was found dead Saturday at his Los Angeles home. He was 52. In 2007, Penner made international headlines when he announced he was a transsexual and began writing under the byline "Christine Daniels." Colleagues said suicide was the suspected cause of death. Writing for more than two decades at the Times, Penner covered professional football and sports media. "He was one of the most talented writers I've ever worked with," said the newspaper's sports editor, adding, "He was a gentle man, a kind man. It's just a tragedy."
