Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was indicted by a grand jury today on six counts, including attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, which carries up to a life sentence, and attempted murder, similar to what shoe bomber Richard Reid faced. The Nigerian student, who is said to be connected to al Qaeda, is accused of trying to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight on Christmas Day using chemical explosives hidden in his clothing, but evaded terrorism charges. When the bomb did not go off, Abdulmutallab was restrained by passengers and crew members. He is being held at the Milan federal prison in Michigan and has a detention hearing set on Friday.
