The 2010 Census has sparked the question of whether, in 2010, the term "Negro" is offensive or outdated. Question 9 on the census form asks participants about race, giving people the option to check a box labeled "Black, African Am. or Negro." According to Census Bureau spokesman Jack Martin, "Negro" was included on the form because "Many older African-Americans identified themselves that way, and many still do." Martin added, "Those who identify themselves as Negroes need to be included." The form passed Congress' muster over a year ago, and the term "Negro" has been included on previous census forms. But many African Americans feel the term is old-fashioned. As one Brooklyn salesman put it, "It's a bad vibe word" that "doesn't agree with my heart."
