Avatar spent its fourth consecutive week at the top of the box office, taking in $48.5 million over the weekend, bringing its total domestic gross to $429 million and its international total to $1.34 billion, second only to Titanic, which earned $1.843 billion in theaters. “Exactly 12 years ago, James Cameron and his juggernaut Titanic was the king of the box-office world, the question is, how long will Avatar manage to hold its death grip around the No. 1 spot?” said the president of Hollywood.com’s box-office division. Robert Downey Jr.’s spin on Sherlock Holmes came in second place with $16.6 million, while Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel was a close third with $16.3 million. Meanwhile, the vampire trend is still going strong, and Ethan Hawke’s Daybreakers earned a better-than-expected $15 million.
