As a third storm hit California Wednesday, hundreds of people in the foothill communities of the San Gabriel Mountains received house calls from police officers and sheriff's deputies strongly encouraging them to evacuate before their properties were hit with floods and "debris flows"-the dangerous result of heavy rains racing down hills and mountains empty of vegetation. Some residents were already on the way out when the authorities arrived, while others were determined to stay, building makeshift flood walls or sandbag barriers. The storm affected other areas in Southern California as well: In Orange County, the storms spawned a tornado yesterday; in Burbank, two aircrafts were hit by lightning after reaching their gates.
