Another wrench in the wheels of President Obama’s plan to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay: A Justice Department-led task force has concluded that almost 50 of the 196 detainees at Gitmo should be held indefinitely without trial. It’s the first time the administration has announced how many detainees it considers too dangerous to release, but also impossible to prosecute because the detainees could, among other things, challenge evidence obtained through coercion. The task force divides detainees into two other groups: 35 who should be tried in federal or military courts; and at least 110 who can be released.
