As many as 1 million people desperately need shelter in Haiti, and the U.N. says it's short on tents-not to mention safe buildings-for people to sleep in. The International Organization for Migration says it might take experts weeks to find good sites to erect tents cities that can house all the earthquake's displaced persons. The agency's Port-au-Prince warehouse has just 10,000 tents, about 10 percent of the number needed. It has asked for $30 million to buy more, and has received about $20 million so far. About 235,000 Port-au-Prince residents have taken up the government's offer of free transportation to other cities in country; others have left on their own, some on foot.
