A winter storm pummeled the Southeast and parts of the Northeast, bringing down power lines and slicking roads with ice Saturday. Mid-Atlantic cities are seeing record snow, such as the 11 inches in Asheville, North Carolina, that destroyed the 1930 record of six inches. The town of Cary, North Carolina, ironically had to cancel its Winter Wonderland festival. Parts of Virginia are expecting a foot of snow, and four to eight inches are forecast in Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. There was a run on generators, fire logs, and ice-melting chemicals at the Home Depot in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Highways were icy statewide in Tennessee, and in northern Georgia, 2,900 customers were without power, down from 5,000 earlier in the morning.
