In the wake of Wednesday's snow storm—the second major storm to hit Washington within a week, which brought its seasonal total to 54.9 inches, breaking a 110-year-old record—the shelves at a D.C. supermarket were nearly bare and the employees were out of sight. A few customers found something worth taking, and paid for the items on the way out the door. "People were getting groceries and leaving the money on the counter," one witness told The Washington Post. A shopper told the paper that another couple came in, grabbed some items and leave payment. Police escorted people out of the store, and a spokesman from the supermarket denied that there had been anything taken. But it's clear that some kindness persists through Washington's cruel winter.
