It’s not a bird, nor a plane, but photographer Aaron Gustafson taking landscape pictures while floating thousands of feet in the air. The Seattle-based photographer turned skydiver is seeing his subject through a daring lens as he jumps from planes to get his shot. As Gustafson free falls at over 130 miles per hour, he uses a custom-designed camera strapped to his helmet to snap just one image per jump. He’s already taken about 25 dives and subsequent photos, resulting in dramatic aerial views of countrywide locations ranging from the Shawangunk Ridge in New York to the Cascade Range and Puget Sound across the U.S. in Washington. “This is what you’d get if you threw Ansel Adams out of a plane,” Guftafson said of his work.
