Two days before the Whitney Biennial 2010 officially opened, some of the art-obsessed elite attended a preview event at the New York City museum. Actress Chloe Sevigny was on hand on Tuesday to view the show, which is smaller than the 2008 exhibition. Curators Francesco Bonami and Gary Carrion-Murayari reduced the number of artists to 55, which they say allows for closer art-audience interaction, but also cuts costs. The 2008 biennial occurred during a far different financial environment that one art investor called, the peak of the art market bubble. “There is a more modest approach to materials because of the economic situation,” said Carrion-Murayari. “Artists aren’t able to act on a spectacular scale.”
