Deutsche Bank is branching out to a new medium, granting its first ever “Artist of the Year” award to Wangechi Mutu. The African artist was selected on the recommendation of a team of curators on the bank’s Global Art Advisory Council, including Okwui Enwezor, Hou Hanru, Udo Kittelmann, and Nancy Spector. “We want to underline the philosophy of Deutsche Bank’s art program: promoting young contemporary artists from all over the world,” said Dueutsche’s global head of art. The inaugural winner, Nairobi-born New York resident, Mutu has already had her mixed media collages on exhibit at the Tate Modern in London and the Kunthalle in Vienna. But as part of her new honor, she will present a show of her works at the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin from April 30 to June 13.
