Actor Robert De Niro has recovered six paintings by his late father, Robert De Niro, Sr., whose works hang in MoMA, the Met, and the Hirshhorn. The paintings were recovered from Salander-O’Reilly Galleries LLC, which went bankrupt in 2007 after accusations that the gallery was selling works it hadn’t purchased. De Niro will reclaim the works if he pays the gallery a fee of $14,000. Works not under an ownership dispute will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to creditors. The elder De Niro, who died of cancer 17 years ago, was friends with Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Anaïs Nin, Henry Miller, and Tennessee Williams.
