Otto Dix was one of the first to create some of the most divisive work of the 20th century and now his art is being honored for the first time in the United States. New York’s Neue Galerie is giving Dix his first North American show, featuring his sometimes horrifying works of Europe’s shattered post-war state. “I am neither political nor tendentious, nor pacifistic, nor moralizing, nor anything else,” Dix once insisted. Soon, his attention turned from guns and dead bodies to rapists and prostitutes, filtering German cities. “The idea ... is to depict the whole ghastly, dehumanizing effect of prostitution ... to demonstrate the hideous consequences on their minds and bodies,” he said of his subject choice.
