The opening of Holy Week this year has been tainted by the recent crisis accusing the Vatican of taking part in a clerical sex abuse scandal. Pope Benedict XVI, however, announced on Palm Sunday that he would “not be intimidated” by the allegations. The Pope said Jesus Christ “leads us towards courage which does not allow us to be intimidated by the chatter of dominant opinions, towards patience which supports and sustains others,” in his address at St. Peter’s Square. The most recent accusations involve the Pope’s role as a Cardinal in allowing a known pedophile priest to receive “therapy” in his diocese. The Vatican has said his response has been “effective” and he’s followed a zero-tolerance policy.
