Florida immigration jails released more than three dozen survivors of the Haiti earthquake Thursday. The Haitians, many of whom had lost relatives or had been plucked from the rubble, were ushered onto military transports in Port-au-Prince and brought to the U.S. However, instead of being welcomed into the country, they were detained for two months because they didn't have visas, despite an indefinite suspension on deportations of Haitians following the earthquake. The released Haitians were met with jubilant relatives and lawyers who had advocated for their freedom.
