Northeastern states that are suffering record rainfall and flooding shouldn’t expect much federal relief: Republican senators have blocked an extension of funds for the National Flood Insurance Program. The funding for the flood insurance was blocked by Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Jim Bunning of Kentucky. As a consequence, the 5.5 million flood-insurance policyholders in flood plains will be unable to renew their policies, including those in states like Rhode Island and Massachusetts, which are seeing their worst flooding in more than 100 years.
