Don’t expect to see Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele in the unemployment line any time soon: Despite the scandal over his lavish expenses, including an RNC reimbursement to a donor who spent $2,000 at a bondage-themed strip club, Marc Ambinder lists five reasons why Steele won’t be fired: 1) It would require a full two-thirds of RNC members to vote to boot him; 2) he’s no less popular with the public, really, than other GOP leaders; 3) he’s a “fairly competent fundraiser”; “the press would focus obsessively on the impeachment process,” making Republicans look even worse than they do currently; 5) “Republicans don’t want to be stuck with the symbolism of having rejected their first elected black chairman because of financial issues and/or problems controlling his public image.”
