As if the buzz over the next-generation iPhone wasn’t indication enough of the company’s popularity, the numbers to back it up are out. Apple’s second-quarter profits were up a whopping 90 percent, due to sales of their Mac computers and iPhones. iPhone units sold were double what they were a year ago—helped in part by the company opening up to more carriers and international sales—and Macs were up 33 percent. iPod sales, though, have dipped slightly, down 1 percent, as the iPod touch’s popularity has increased. Not accounted for in the recent profit numbers is the newest gadget in the line, the iPad, which the company is keeping tight-lipped on how many units have shipped.
