Barack Obama may have called it misguided, but Arizona Governor Jan Brewer chose to ignore him Friday as she signed into law the controversial immigration bill that has sent much of the state up in arms. "We in Arizona have been more than patient waiting for Washington to act," said Brewer, a Republican who expects to face stiff opposition in November. "But decades of federal inaction and misguided policy have created an unacceptable situation." The measure, which requires police officers to question anyone who gives them cause to believe they are in the country illegally, is now sparking debate all over the country just seven months before the midterm elections—Hispanic blocs are vowing to push for Democrats. On Friday, Obama urged Congress to act quickly on immigration reform so that the mistakes of Arizona would not be repeated.
