The Kentucky Derby won’t be pretty. With heavy rain over Lexington—over an inch fell by 7:30 a.m.—the track is quickly turning into a muddy mess that could turn the race on its head. Early morning workouts were already postponed due to the poor quality of the dirt circuit, which will only get worse with a full day’s racing before the Derby. Still, all 20 horses in the field are expected to start. “I think they’d run over crushed glass,” one trainer joked.
