Not bad for a day’s work. On Tuesday night, Christie’s auction house sold a 1932 Picasso piece, entitled “Nu au Plateau de Sculpteur (Nude, Greens Leaves and Bust),” for a record $106.5 million. The piece, created in just one day, is said to mark a turning point for the artist, who began gravitating toward “bigger, more sensual” subjects around that year, according to The New York Times. The painting depicts Picasso’s mistress, Marie-Thérèse Walter, as both a nude and a bust, with the painter’s own profile obscured in the background. The winning bidder, Nicholas Hall, kept mum on who he was buying the piece for. The previous auction record was held by Giacometti's "Walking Man I," which went for $104.3 million in February.
