Two paintings, one by Andy Warhol and one by Mark Rothko, each sold for more than $30 million in New York auctions this week, suggesting that deep pockets have returned to the art market. The price for the Warhol painting was the highest ever paid for a self-portait done by the famous Pop artist. It was completed a year before his death in 1987. Rothko's painting went for $31.4 million and was a red abstract composition. The boffo sales come a week after a Picasso sold for $106.5 million, setting a record.
