Nine-year-old Ruben van Assouw is recovering in the hospital, unaware that his brother, father, and mother were killed on their way home from a safari vacation. He is the sole survivor of the plane crash in Libya that killed all of the other 103 passengers on a flight from South Africa. Patrick van Assouw, Ruben’s father, detailed the family’s adventures through South Africa, Swaziland, and Lesotho, in a blog discovered today. In it he describes an ideal family holiday, with viewings of wild animals like rhinoceros, zebra, hippos, and elephants. The Dutch foreign ministry said the boy could return to the Netherlands this weekend.
