Fashion Designers Embrace the Inkjet

Much to the chagrin of fashionistas, technological advances are seldom sexy or glamorous—especially when they look like office printers. But as designers seek to produce more and more intricate prints, many are turning to inkjet printing. The process allows designers to easily create custom patterns and images without the long, labor-intensive process of silk- or mesh-screening. Up until now, inkjet printing had been reserved for T-shirts and carrier bags, but as quality improved, it found its way into the work of designers for Helmut Lang, Akris, Zac Posen and Valentino. "I'm getting crisp, sharp edges that I can't get in screen print," said designer Sara Rotman.
