Renowned broadcast journalist Ted Koppel's son Andrew died Monday at a Washington Heights apartment in New York City following a daylong bender. Koppel, 40, commenced his day of drinking at Smith's Bar & Restaurant, where he met Russell Wimberly, a 32-year-old waiter at the Midtown establishment. "There was a lot of alcohol. He didn't take anything else [drugs] around me, and neither of us ate all day," Wimberly said. The two later ventured uptown to the apartment of Belinda Caban, a friend of Wimberly's. Koppel became unresponsive and stopped breathing. "When the ambulance came, they said he was dead," said Caban. Koppel, who was an attorney with the city housing authority, is survived by his girlfriend and their baby daughter.
