It’s been a protracted battle between M.I.A. and The New York Times Magazine since the controversial profile on the singer/political activist was published Sunday. After M.I.A. posted writer Lynn Hirschberg’s phone number on Twitter and leaked audio snippets from the interview, The New York Times Magazine issued a correction to the original piece. Apparently M.I.A., while discussing her efforts to draw attention to the civil war in her home country of Sri Lanka, was quoted as making a series of remarks that Hirschberg stitched into one long statement. So, although M.I.A. did make these remarks, she did not make them consecutively or in the order they were presented. The correction, taken with the audio released from the interview, makes it appear as though M.I.A.’s “warmongering zealotry” was perhaps overstated for the purpose of strengthening the piece’s angle.
