Two would-be New Jersey terrorists were arrested Saturday night as they prepared to board flights bound for Egypt from Kennedy International Airport. The pair would end their journey in Somalia, where they allegedly hoped to join the Islamic extremist group Al Shababa, which claims ties to Al Qaeda, and commit a “violent jihad.” Though a Homeland Security spokesman said the arrests “do not relate to an immediate threat,” Mohamed Hamoud Alessa, 20, and Carlos Eduardo Almonte, 26, have been charged with conspiring to kill, maim, and kidnap people outside the United States—and they’ve been under investigation since 2006. The men had physically trained themselves for the mission, The New York Times reports, as well as saved up money for the trip, and gotten their hands on military gear and apparel. They’ll appear in U.S. District Court in Newark on Monday.
