The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, already a tremendous contributor to public health causes worldwide, has announced a five-year commitment to maternal and child health in the developing world, namely Ethiopia and India. The philanthropic giant will spend $1.5 billion on family planning, training health workers, nutritional programs, and other initiatives. “The world must come together to save women’s and children’s lives,” said Melinda Gates at the three-day Women Deliver conference in Washington, D.C., referring to the "stunningly" low costs of preventing maternal death and infant mortality, issues that plague developing countries. Gates told The New York Times that the impetus for this latest effort was the success of other poor nations contending with infant and maternal mortality, primarily Malawi.
